Desert National Park with an area of 3100 sq km is among the largest National Parks in India. The desert sanctuary has a fragile ecosystem with its own distinct flora and fauna.
About the park
Eagles, harriers, falcons, buzzards, kestrel and vultures as well as short- toed eagles, tawny eagles, spotted eagles, lagger falcons and kestrels are found here. Sandgrouse are seen near ponds and lakes. Sea shells and massive fossilized tree trunks in this park point to the geological history of the desert. Black buck, a type of antelope, desert fox, Bengal fox, wolf and desert cat also inhabit this national park.
Inside the park, Sudashri Forest Post is the best vantage point for observing the wildlife. Sand dunes cover about 20% area of the park. Other land forms are craggy rocks and compact salt lake bottoms, inter medial areas and fixed dunes.
Staying there and getting about
As this National Park is on the Bikaner- Jodhpur- Jaisalmer circuit, there is abundant and excellent quality of accommodation available at all price points. Jaisalmer is the closest point at 40 km distance. All visitors to Desert national sanctuary have to pay an entry fee of Rs 100 per person. Fee for jeep and car is Rs.100 and for coach it is Rs. 200.
