Amber Fort - A Dream In Marble And Red Sandstone
Amber Fort is a stunning and imposing structure. Its construction was started in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I but completed in its present form by Raja Jai Singh I. While the Fort is rugged and imposing from the outside, its interiors are sprawling, warm and beautifully decorated. The Maotha Lake in its foreground reflects the crystal clear image of the Fort and adds its beauty.
Reaching There
The Fort can be reached by road through a quick drive or an elephant ride, which though it takes much more time, is tremendous fun. On reaching the grand Singh Pol gateway and from there onwards is the Jaleb Chowk, the courtyard for disembarking. Here on are two flights of steps, one leading to Sheetla Mata complex with its enshrined image of the goddess, and the other to the main palace complex.
Inside The Amber Fort
The walls of the Fort are decorated with paintings of royal hunting scenes, intricate carvings, delicate mirror work and beautiful mosaic. Inside the Fort is the Ganesh Pol, a massive gateway painted with images of Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed god. Diwan-i-Am or Hall of the Public Audience has spectacular pillars. Other highlights inside the Amber Fort are Sukh Nivas, Jas Mandir apartments and the Charbagh garden with its symmetrical landscaping. Pierced screen windows offer views from points of vantage, and also must see are the shimmering mirrors encrusting the walls of the Sheesh Mahal.
A walk through the rambling lanes of the Fort is extremely rewarding for the visitor. The flawless beauty of the Amber Fort has to be enjoyed and any trip to Jaipur is incomplete without a visit to the Amber Fort.
